This refractometer is mainly used in veterinary medicine for urine analysis. When examining urine, it is important that glucose (sugar content via the refractive index (3rd scale)) and proteins (1st scale) are measured simultaneously, as these two parameters influence the refraction of light on the hand refractometer. The specific gravity (2nd scale) is a measure of the urine concentration and reflects the density ratio of the urine compared to pure water.
