The refractive index serves as a raw value for determining the concentration of sugary solutions, as all other variables (Brix, Oechsle, etc.) can be calculated directly from this measured value. With the least error-prone unit, the scale is therefore universally applicable, but is used in particular in laboratories and in the pharmaceutical industry.
