The shadow of the gem is cast on the scale and the RI is read where the shadow line runs.

Like any typical critical angle refractometer, it measures the refractive index of faceted stones, transparent to nearly opaque, whether loose or mounted (in many cases), up to an R.I. value of 1.81. This model is solidly built and of the highest quality. It is equipped with a built-in monochromatic filter, so that no special monochromatic illuminator is required. The instrument's eyepiece contains a polarizing filter for precise measurement of birefringence and is telescopically adjustable for the clearest possible image. The refractometer kit also includes a bottle of refractive index liquid and a calibration block.
If the gemstone is birefringent, which is best seen by rotating the polarizing filter while looking at the scale, two shadow lines will be seen, the numerical difference of which corresponds to the birefringence of the gemstone.
